Unions play an important role in representing workers and supporting strong workplace standards. At the same time, good governance requires systems that are transparent, fair, and based on choice. No worker should feel obligated to support political positions they don’t agree with.
A citizen-initiated referendum application has been submitted to Elections Alberta to ask whether public sector union membership and dues should be voluntary. This is about ensuring workers have a clear, democratic say in how they participate, while keeping workplace representation strong and accountable.
"Should Alberta make public sector union dues and membership voluntary?"
The application is currently under review, a process of about 30 days.
If approved, Albertans will have 120 days to collect roughly 177,000 handwritten signatures.
No signatures can be collected yet, but now is the time to ensure Albertans who value fairness, accountability, and balanced decision-making are informed and ready.
